Submit to Imagnary House
If you walk in the measurable, you miss out on the imaginable.
You've finished a book! Well done! Please remember that this submission is a query letter to us (i.e. it is a business pitch). How to write a query letter?
- Keep it brief. Ideally one A4 page in 12-point Garamond. If you can keep it shorter, wonderful. No longer, please.
- Summarise your book, but don't write a synopsis. We ask for a synopsis additionally. This is your space to tell us the background behind the book, why it was written, who it was written for, what makes it worth reading.
- Your query letter should not be a duplicate of your synopsis, but rather speak to us about what makes your submission different, and what makes you stand out. Do you have previous publications? Have you won awards? If not, tell us about why you started writing and why you want to write... where you grew up, but make sure what you tell us is relevant to your book and you as an author.
- Please refrain from using language that praises your book, but rather explain the story and we will come to our own conclusion on it. As Joshua Bilmes said, "Avoid adjectives. You're not a third-party observer who's earned the right to say your manuscript is "romantic" or "thrilling" or "fast-paced" or any other adjective you might choose to apply to your own work." Should it be something we'll enjoy, we'll have those thoughts and they will be worth more if you haven't told us you expect us to have them.
Lastly, if we don't accept your book, it is not always a reflection of the quality of your writing or story. Sometimes we don't understand your pitch, and other times it is simply not something that we're looking to represent. Don't be dismayed by a rejection but rather take is as constructive feedback and consider how you better your story or your pitch in the future, or if you pitched your story to the correct publishing house.
