Query Patrice Caldwell at New Leaf Literary & Media

Hi! A few things to note:

1. I'm a Senior Literary Agent at New Leaf Literary & Media. My list is focused on children's and adult, fiction and nonfiction.

Some non-client recent reads that are reflective of my taste include Trial of the Sun Queen by Nisha J. Tuli (such a fun romantic read! I’d love to see more romantasy or romantic fantasy in my inbox), Immortal Longings by Chloe Gong (the world, the writing, and the characters are amazing and also I love books that retell/are inspired by a classic), Dear Child by Romy Hausmann (I don't always love thrillers because I'm really good at guessing the twists, but this one had me HOOKED and I read it in two days, which is very fast for me), Happy Place by Emily Henry (honestly, anything by Emily Henry), and Kingdom of the Wicked by Kerri Maniscalco (it's romantic and also I love how important family is throughout).

After my own CPTSD diagnosis, I read What My Bones Know by Stephanie Foo and it was such a gripping, cathartic, and emotional in the best way read—I felt like her story was my story and I’ve never read something I related to more. On the nonfiction side, in general,
I represent and I’m interested in a wide range of topics. I’ve sold books about the history of trans people in film, memoirs, and more humorous/table top books as well.

I’m especially interested in works by BIPOC, queer, chronically ill (I have MS & endometriosis) writers as these are identities I share (& this goes for fiction, too, the book doesn’t have to be about that, but I’m really interested in hearing from these POVs).

I’d also love anything you can comp to the works of Alexis Henderson, Scarlett St. Clair, Raven Kennedy, or Isabel Cañas.

Also! Would love a mystery similar to Its Elementary by Elise Bryant.

I’m a lifelong urban fantasy and paranormal romance reader, and recently read and LOVED Bride by Ali Hazlewood. So, if you have anything you can comp to that or the works of Ilona Andrews, Kim Harrison, Patricia Briggs, and Nalini Singh to name a few, please do send my way. I grew up reading many of those authors in addition to Laurel K. Hamilton (those early Anita Blake books are perfection) and Anne Rice (I love the new shows--both Interview + Mayfair) and that led to a love of pretty much anything gothic, urban fantasy, and paranormal (again, if you have anything in these genres, I’d love to read it!).

A few other all-time favorites are The Expanse (book + TV series), A Discovery of Witches (book + TV series), Code Name Verity, Kushiel's Dart (anything with these vibes, I'd LOVE to read), and I'm maybe a bit obsessed with anything Joanna Gaines (& thus, I own all her books).

More about me: I have three cats, two named after DC characters (Harley) Quinn and Raven and the third is a kitten named Lucy. I'm the oldest of five, and I love being a big sister (& I love books that deal with all types of family dynamics). I love collecting, drinking, and learning about wine--I am especially passionate about Texas wines (we have fantastic soil for it!). I also really love tea and traveling. I speak a bit of French (once upon a time, I was fluent, however, I still understand it very well). Lupita Nyong’o's ideal reading experience is also mine—reading is one of my favorite hobbies, I tend to read a lot of fantasy and a lot of romance, but I’m also a mood reader so I have been known to switch to a completely different genre that I’ve never read if that’s what I’m in the mood for, which is why my list as an agent is so wide spanning. I love getting to learn more about different people and topics and things through my clients’ work.

I am not signing middle grade, illustrators, or picture book writers at this time. If a genre is not checked, it means I am not looking for books in that genre and your submission will be passed on.

2. Please follow our submission guidelines.

3. If you're unable to use QueryManager, please send your query to query@newleafliterary.com with my name and the category and genre of your work in the subject line (i.e. Query - Patrice Caldwell - Adult Fantasy).

4. Please do not query multiple agents at New Leaf at the same time. We do share queries internally, but you're always welcome to query another New Leaf agent if eight weeks has passed with no response from the agent you're currently querying (due to the volume of queries, we are unfortunately unable to respond to each one).

Thank you for considering me for your work!

Best,
Patrice
